Sustainability used to be defined at the beginning as the relation between environment and people, which included water wasted, energy saver, and so on. The concept sustainability referenced implicitly to human being and the nature resources. The fact that evolution of the progress of technology goes so fast, so the meaning people use daily. Because everything gets changed while human being transforms the world, it is the same for terms used by ecosysytems. What is sustainability means today?
Let’s see how this concept gets changed by the time and its rapport to the social and my social organization in Haiti.
For most people, Sustainability relates to complexity subject. Most of the time in the past, it was a very confusing concept. That’s why it was very misunderstood and misused term. The meaning of this concept leaded to an interaction between people and the environment, which represented some factors like reducing wastes, saving the wildlife, and protecting the recycling. As Chairman, Ray C. Anderson wrote: “Years ago, the word "sustainability" meant little or nothing to Interface's”.
Nevertheless, sustainability represents much more than that it was defined before. Sustainability is a broader term these days, including the economic, the cultural, and the social. For the Forum of the Future, Sustainability is a process: "A dynamic process which enables all people to realize their potential and to improve their quality of life in ways that simultaneously protect and enhance the Earth's life support systems".
Sustainability has been having a new approach referring to a new involvement of human being in problems that the humanity faces these days. This involvement implies solutions to problems without compromising the actual and future generation. These solutions, because they have made met the real needs of people, are good for the future. This is social sustainability, that is defined as the understanding and adopting good choices for generation to generations. Those choices will affect not only generations but also other comminutes, even countries, and the world.
Because the social sustainability targets improvements at any level of humanity, it’s also related to more basic needs of happiness, safety, freedom, dignity and affection, they said. For instance, in Haiti, 1999, I opened a centre to rehab female teenagers who were pregnant while they were in school. The centre had for goals to back those to social life by creating a technical professional school to help them to have skills to face their kids and owns needs. In fact, with the support of two psychologists, those teenagers after their parents lived them alone on the street, became florists, assistant nurses, helper computer. Even though, in Haiti, the government does not provide any help to that category of people, Christian Organization Realty and Action by my friends and I contributed one hundred teenagers to return to survive in society. That is what will affect the Haitian society because we saved them from becoming bad guys of lot crimes. By doing that, we brought happiness, safety, dignity and affection to the community.
As we can see, the social sustainability applies social capital. Social capital is investments and services that create the basic framework for society. Like the implementation of my organization in Haiti nine years ago, this social capital represents some support to the community; it was injected to improve life to those female teenagers.
