Is it mundane art

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 8 months ago

It was not until the emergence of Impressionism in the middle of the 19th century that art truly began to push the boundaries. The combining contemporary views and abstract ideas with a representation of the environment set off a chain reaction that would change art forever. Art has always expressed religious views, from the famous Sistine Chapel to the unconventional Holy Virgin Mary which was partly crafted with elephant dung. Pop art was another major movement during which art was connected with the common man. Andy Warhol gave meaning to the mundane when he changed the way people look at Campbell Soup Cans. Minimalism really started to blur the line between tasteful and absurd. The famous urinal placement is not actually a sculpture, but was once a working urinal which was simply turned upside down. The question often raised is "Is it a urinal, or is it art?" What I want to know is, can it not be both?
