Ratatouille is a computer-animated family film that won an Academy Award in 2007. This film was produced by Pixar and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. Brad Bird was the producer of Ratatouille. The title of this movie refers to a French dish that is seen served in this film. The concept, sets, characters, and the core storyline was produced by Jan Pinkava, but then Pixar lost confidence in Pinkava so they replaced him with Bird. Bird decided to rewrite the story by giving larger roles to Skinner and Colette, and also changing the appearance of the rats to be less anthropomorphic.
One of the biggest challenges for this movie was the food design. Filmmakers needed to create computer-generated food animations that appear real and delicious. To do this the animators attended cooking classes. Techniques such as the sub-surface light scattering that was used on skin in The Incredibles was on the fruits and veggies. Music, dialogue and abstract imagery which represented the characters' sensations helped complete the illusion.
The characters were created by animators studying the movements of the animals' fur, noses, ears, paws and tails as they ran. People like Debbie Ducommun, a rat inspector, were brought in to consult with the animators on rat habits and characteristics.
Ratatouille opened in 3940 theaters and debuted at #1 with $47 million, but in France the movie made the biggest record for an animated film. Most of the reviews on the movie were positive.
