My two words: Sustainability and Obesity

Check out what I found when entering Sustainability and Obesity in a Google search. It was a short but sweet article on how the Sustainable Food Movement could and should be implemented into school children's nutritional programs.

This article did not have any comments posted to it, but it did welcome them.

My response to this article would be in agreement with what the author has written. I would also argue that it is a good idea to implement a more nutritious program into school children's life because creating this habit early will have a positive impact on their own personal sustainability. The Sustainable Food Movement would aim to have these children eating fruits and vegetables from their local communities based on what is in season. This would in turn save on energy because they wouldn't be importing out of season produce from across the country or even across the world.

Yes on all 3 counts....as you said in class, perhaps expand into a definition essay that persuades a specific group (audience, contingent cooperators) to pursue these connections and realize them.

I have a strong attachement to the issue of obesity because to me it is something that has run way out of control, and is completely preventable and most often is reversible. Of course I understand that when someone is obese, it isn't always that they are just hiding cookies under their bed... don't get me wrong. I do know that there are medical conditions that make obesity prominent in certain people. However, as someone that has allergies needs to adjust what they eat so that they do not have a reaction... someone prone to obesity needs to adjust their intake in order to prevent the terrible conditions that go along with obesity; diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol.

I would also argue more in depth that living sustainably will help to fix the obesity epidemic because of some very strong arguments that I have read in the book Fighting Globesity, written by a friend of mine in New Zealand.

More to come on the book later...

Preventions to Obesity:

Teachers and parents can be positive role models to this kids by improving their own eating and physical activity habits. Teachers can create a healthy eating policy for classrooms and school activities. Teachers can also provide opportunities for students to eat their veggies and fruits. Incoporting physical activity into the classroom and awarding kids with fun acitivities instead of candy can also prevent obesity. If parents can improve their child's concemtration and learning at school if they provide a nutritious breakfast. Parents can help prevent obesity also by makeing healthy lunches for their kids to take to school and also by incorporting physical activities into their daily routines. Students and administrators play a huge role in preventing obesity. They can demand an improvement in the quality of the food served at school and they can get the principal to install healthier foods into the vending machines. Encouraging one another to eat healthier and attend in physical activities is the best medicine for preventing obesity. When people see their friends eatting better and having fun in their activities, it can encourage others to do the same. There are several ways in which people and children can prevent obesity. The only thing that is standing in our way is our choice to choose to eat healthier and be active in physical activity. Instead of driving to work or school, try walking. Stop watching TV and call your friends over to play football or go to the gym together. People are just lazy that is the problem. Lets get off the couch, out of bed and lets get moving and have fun. I guarentee that the healthier you eat and the more exercise you get, the better you will feel and the more energy you will have.
